Drug Interaction between Amlodipine and Diclofenac Potassium |
Amlodipine is used to treat hypertension. It belongs to the class of calcium channel blockers.
Diclofenac potassium is used as analgesic. It belongs to Non-Steroidal Anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is cyclooxygenase inhibitor.
Interaction Mechanism
What happens when you use both drugs concomitantly? Data indicate that some cyclooxygenase inhibitors may reduce the antihypertensive effects of some calcium channel blockers. This is due to an alteration of vascular tone, which are dependent on prostacyclin’s and other vasodilatory prostanoids. When a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) is included to the treatment regimen of a patient who is already taking a calcium channel blocker, then increase in blood pressure may result. Also, the clinician should be aware that the risk of hypotension is increased when NSAIDs are withdrawn from regimen.
MANAGEMENT: Monitoring of blood pressure is recommended.
Recommendation: It is recommended that don’t use the diclofenac potassium and amlodipine concomitantly.
